Teacher Training: Power Talks - American Presidents in Their Own Words
Prof. Dr. Heike Paul, Dr. Katharina Gerund, FAU LS Amerikanistik
„Yes, We Can“, „America First,“ „God Bless America“ – these slogans and phrases of presidential rhetoric define Americanness and American national identity. In doing so they attempt to constitute an American citizenry as a collective entity and usually garner heightened media attention. Presidential speeches especially echo what Robert Bellah has described as „American civil religion“ in a context of American exceptionalism. This seminar analyzes selected campaign talks & songs, inauguration speeches, and presidential orature in order to show the making of public (patriotic) feeling, the staging of political power, and political/presidential agenda setting.
