Film & Discussion: Logan

Film Series: New Westerns

This semester’s film series explores what is often regarded the most American of all film genres: The Western. Moving beyond the classical Western formula, we will focus on two of its most prominent variations: Revisionist Westerns and Neo-Westerns. The first three films in the series belong to the former category; they question the mythical version of the Old West and try to paint a more ‘realistic’ image. The other three films can be classified as Neo-Westerns which use (and also revise) the established formula but locate their story within a contemporary setting. Come out: watch, explore and discuss.

Logan (2017, Regie: James Mangold) FSK 16, 141 Min., OV (Florian Tatschner, M.A.)

In the third and last film of the Wolverine series, mutants are on the brink of extinction. In the year 2029, ageing Logan, alias Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), spends his remaining time close to the border of Mexico. In this deserted place, he makes a living as a limousine driver together with two other mutants: Caliban (Stephen Merchant) and Charles Xavier, better known as Professor X (Patrick Stewart), who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease that affects his mutant skills and his brilliant mind. Logan’s exile ends when a woman working for Alkali-Transigen, a biotechnology corporation, approaches him and asks him to bring her and her daughter Laura (Dafne Keen) to a safe place in North Dakota, called “Eden.” When it turns out that Laura is a mutant girl having been created by the biotech company, Logan finds himself struggling against evil powers from both present and past to protect his disciple.
