Teacher Training Seminar: Teaching Historical Data in the Context of Immigration, Assimilation and Pluralism

Christina A. Ziegler-McPherson, Ph.D, Bremen

This Seminar is especially geared towards teachers of bilingual education who teach History, Social Studies, Geography and/or English. Primary source documents from the 19th century will be discussed to learn about people, places and events from the past. We will focus on how to work with these documents in the classroom. In the first half of the workshop the participants will be looking at the historical context of the development of two immigrant communities, Kleindeutschland in New York City and Chinatown in San Francisco. They are the basis of discussion on integration and pluralism as a whole. In the second half the seminar we will focus on the practicalities of how teachers could use the lesson plan. The information will be made available to all participants who will receive sample lesson plans and materials they can use in their classrooms.
