Using Film in Class: Diversity in Contemporary American Cinema

Fiona Pleasance, Lehrbeauftragte HS Ansbach und TH Nürnberg

This workshop concerns the use of feature films as a teaching aid in class, with a focus on the subject of diversity in contemporary media. In the introduction we will look at some of the attempts to define and rectify issues of representation in film, both behind and in front of the camera, from the Bechdel Test to #OscarsSoWhite. After this, we will be taking a more detailed look at several recent Hollywood movies which address various diversity issues, such as Moonlight, Hidden Figures, Get Out and Wonder Woman. Participants will receive an overview of each recommended film, as well as suggestions for different approaches and topics for discussion in class.
