The American South: An Introduction (Part I)

Dr. Christine Granger-Vahl

The South is a distinct historical, cultural and political part of the United States. In this course, we will read fiction and non-fiction, watch movies, and discuss our observations. We will learn about the geography of the South, its unique culture and a society that is still shaped by the legacies of slavery and the Civil Rights Movement. Our first text will be Paul Theroux’s Deep South (2015), a travel narrative (featuring photographs by Steve McCurry) that takes us from the South Carolina coast to the Mississippi River and into the hills of Arkansas. Join us for a tour de force through a quintessential American region. Along the way, you will practice your English discussion skills and become more proficient.

Please note: The first two sessions on November 17 and December 15, 2020, will serve to find out what you are interested in, and we will design the rest of the course accordingly.

Recommended level of English: B2 to C2.
