„Black Activism in Rap Music“ workshop with the Hardenberg Gymnasium Fürth

Students of the Hardenberg Gymnasium in Fürth visited the DAI to attend Hana Vrdoljak's (FAU) workshop "Black Activism in Rap Music." Students Luca Haken und Miriam Weidel shared their experience on the school's website.

DAI lecturer Hana Vrdoljak (FAU) began the workshop "Black Activism in Rap Music" with a short introduction to the history of rap and hip-hop culture in the U.S. Then, the students were divided into groups and were given a task to examine the forms of Black activism in songs by 2Pac, Kendrick Lamar and Childish Gambino. Apart from analyzing the lyrics, they also had to focus on the music videos and interpret them by focusing on Black American history and culture.

During their presentations, the students not only shared their thoughts on the deeper meanings behind the rap songs, but also they were able to talk about their personal experiences and preferences in terms of rap and hip-hop.
